ASR Remediation
ASR (Alkali-Silica Reaction)
Concrete Cancer
Have you recently noticed cracking, surface discoloration, or flaking in your pool? Or, have you noticed your pool leaking or draining more quickly than it used to? If so, you might be experiencing a case of Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR), also known as “concrete cancer.”
Many homeowners in the Austin area who installed pools between 2017 and 2023 are now dealing with this phenomenon, which can happen if concrete isn’t mixed correctly and/or does not contain a material called “fly ash.”
According to the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance, ASR has been an issue in the concrete industry (e.g. in highways, bridges, and buildings) since the 1940s. But, because pools are constantly subjected to water, and due to the delay in signs of ASR appearing (typically 2 or more years), the impact can be significant.
